Life is a Highway…

Yesterday, was the best day ever! Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I went on a little drive with the NC. She handled like a dream. Our route took us through mostly mountain passes but that is what the Miata was built for. Being so light weight and having super handling gave us the power to take corners at speeds that would make regular cars shake with fear. We started in Pleasanton and took the foothill roads. Those are fun but mostly residential; so relax and cruise. We had the top down and it was a gorgeous sunny day.

Next, we took a turn towards Sunol. That was the first time I was able to really drive the car and see what it was made of. On this road, there are not too many cars but be weary of bicycle riders and people stopped on the side to take pictures. This is a mostly narrow road with little to no shoulder. The sights are pretty and the corners are sharp. As y’all know, I only upgraded the sway bars, tires, and brakes but with just those mods the car is amazing. I had no worries that the car would fail especially since some of those passes your on the edge on a mountain. The tires gripped the road incredibly well and the sway bars prevented any unwanted roll; if you zoom in on the map you can see all the turns and switchbacks on this run.
I can’t wait to get the new suspension and do a same route comparison.

We left the Sunol Pass and entered Calaveras for a pit stop. There was a great little Starbucks before the free way. We got our caffination on and headed back to the mountains. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend found state route 130 using his phone. We navigated our way there and blasted some music.

After getting used to the car’s abilities, this crazy twisty mountain pass was so much fun. I even let Mr. Awesome Boyfriend drive a little. ;-D He drove a lot more aggressive and even he was impressed with how the NC handled. This road had almost no traffic and no shoulders; so be careful. Also, there are a few times when the road goes into one lane; watch out for oncoming traffic. The view is great (your on top of a mountain)! The new brakes worked well but got very hot toward the end of the run (which was mostly down hill). We stopped for a 10min brake because the brakes were smoking. I’m thinking about getting the Miata MX5 Cold Air Brake Ducting Kit from Good-Win-Racing.

This is an exceptional run and wasn’t too short or long. We literally used only half a tank of gas. I highly recommend this route and the directions and map are posted below.

Totally Addicted!

Phase 2: the NC Saga Continues…

First the tint:

During a morning walk, Mr. Awesome boyfriend and I found Kar Tunes. We are their first walk-in customers. 😀 They do mostly car up grades and window tinting. They set up an appointment for the next day and finished in a few hours. For the two sides and the rear, the tint was about $200. For another $100 they also tinted my markers and tales with Oracle 8300 (purple) which we already purchased.  They did a great job and I highly recommend them.

Then, the front dam, grille, horn, and daytime running lights.

With a little research, we found the best way to take off the front bumper. It took about 20min to get it off. If you don’t have a ratcheting wrench, go get one! It will make your life easier. We went to Lowes to get black plexi dip in a spray and painters tape. We sprayed the area were the daytime running lights are going to be mounted. It dried while we ran some errands and took the bumper off.

The front dam was a little tricky to get on. There was some light drilling involved but once complete it looks awesome! The lights were mounted with 3m VHB tape (Mount the brackets prior to painting, else the tape will not stick correctly.). This tape is better than nails! The grille we got from MX5parts.co.uk and the dams we got from GoMiata.com. The grille we painted with the same Dupi Color purple we used on the other purple pieces.

The cold air intake was easy to replace. The instructions came with the new intake and it had pictures! I decided on the chrome look and I am glad I did because you can see it through the grille. So far, it feels like the Miata can breath easier. The daytime running lights are pretty easy to wire but it helps to have a multi meter. We got one at Wal-Mart for less than $10.

Because the bumper was already off, it made it so easy to install the horn and new head lights. These are small features but they are important in safety. The pervious post showed the difference between a stock horn and a Nautilus horn. Check it out!

Once all back together we had to go for a test drive…

We still have the rear dam to install and the “eye” lids. Then, once tax money comes in… it will be time for the suspension.

ZOOM ZOOM!

This Miata is coming along great! Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I bought some chrome accents and painted them with DupliColor Metalcast metallic purple. It adds a little pigtails touch. It was not easy. We let the paint dry for a week. Then sanded most of the pieces with 2000 grit sandpaper and repainted them. After another week of drying, we wet sanded them again. After a dawn dish soap wash, we started polishing the old fashion way (by hand). We used Griot’s Machine Polish 1 first. Then, polished a second coat with Meguiars ultimate compound. We found that both sanding and the two different polishes gave the pieces a mirror shine. Just make sure to do some stretches because your in for a work out!

We also got some new tires and rims from e-bay. They were $2000 mounted, balanced and delivered. The wheels are Enkei RPF1 17×9 +45 and the tires are Toyo R1R 235/40/R17.  Over the weekend, Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I were able to change the oil, put on an upgraded  brake kit (rotors, pads and stainless steal brake lines), and the new wheels & tires. Not too bad for a days work. Finally, we replaced the stabilizing bars in the front and the back with RX-8 Red Dot and Yellow Dot Stabilizer bars respectivly. I highly recommend the upgrade because the old bars where as thin as an extension cord. You can immediately feel a difference when taking a corner. You don’t feel like you will tip over.

We also decided to change to shifter to a short shifter I.L Motor Sports short shifter. It took some time to change out but it was worth it! The original shifter is very long and    flow-ie. The short shift feels more exact. You know when you are changing gears and there is no: “opps I went into the wrong gear”! That was one of my mistakes when learning how to drive stick.

In future posts we are adding: tint to the back & side windows, tint to the markers, a Nautalis horn, front and rear dams, “eye” lids, a cold air intake, day time running lights, and a purple mesh grill. Stay tuned!

I Feel the Need… the Need for Speed!

I am so excited to talk about my awesome mode of transportation… my 2006 Mazda Miata MX5. She is gorgeous with a black soft top and marble white paint. Thanks to the Internet, this gem was found close by and only had 12,000 miles! The original owners only used the car during vacation. This car is practically new (in car years). There was just one condition: I had to learn how to drive a manual! It took about 3 weeks and a few stalls to get the hang of it. I’m still learning a few tricks but I can now get to work with ease.

This is my first car (that I have purchased) and I have a dream. My goal is to totally make it personal and awesome looking. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend is helping me with all the new modifications. We first washed it from head to toe and made it shine. We used a self serve car wash and brought the Dawn! Really, we used Dawn dish soap. If it can clean animals after an oil spill, it can clean a dusty car. We used Wipe New for all the black plastic pieces like the grill, mirror frame, dash, and antenna. That product was magical and made the car look factory new. For the soft top, we used 303 Fabric/Vinyl convertible top cleaner and 303 Aerospace Protectant. These products made the soft top go from a dingy grey to fabulous black. If you are debating about getting those shammy’s or microfiber towels – DO IT! Regular towels leave lint and don’t absorb as well.

20121221_155124  20130106_182502 20130131_001250

To personalize my dream car, I got a personalized license plate to start- PIGTALS… now everyone will know the girl in pigtails ;-D. It was super easy to get online and was about $30. Besides the normal upgrades like brakes, tires, suspension… I wanted the cool factor. Again, love the internet, we were able to find super easy mods. The shifter knob was changed from stock option to a cool purple marble. The valve stem covers where found online… I got two sets. One is a metallic purple for every day and the other is chrome with purple crystals for when I want to “WOW”. If you can’t tell already, my car is going to be kissed with purple. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend found purple metallic lug nuts for the tires. I also made the decision to upgrade the radio and speakers. I needed something that would connect to my phone via bluetooth and have a hands free mic. I also wanted the display screen to be as close the purple as it could get…the JVC unit (JVC KDX50BT)… was the one for me! It also has the coolest option. You can set a daytime color and a night time color and it switches when you turn on the head lights. So, I have a purple display for daytime and a blue for night. The sound of stock speakers always sounds muffled so, we went with (Polk db 1001 and Polk db 571).

20130119_181351      20121204_163118

The next change up was the fire orange red LED’s used for the dash dials and environment controls. Bluegages.com is a small business based out of the East Coast. He was able to change out the lights to a cool blue color. I know, I tried to get purple but apparently there is only Ultraviolet available. That would not have been seen very well. However, blue is way better than orange in my opinion. 😀

20130119_182123

Mr. Awesome Boyfriend did a lot of research and found that the company logos can be taken off with hot heat and fine thread. De-badged it was but I wasn’t going to leave the car naked. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend found purple metallic paint by Dupi-Color. We also modified the symbol to make it look like pigtails.

On a few web sites, we found a lot of chrome attachments for the Mazda. You guessed it… they will be purplized! The paint takes about a week to set and then a good polishing will bring them to a beautiful shine. I’m using Meguiars Ultimate Compound. Just watch a few ‘youtube’ videos and you will understand. This stuff is amazing and easy to use!

The Lion King

It’s my birthday (in a few days)!

Well, I have to say that this year has been amazing. I am about to be 26 years of age…whoohoo!

This birthday celebration Mr. Awesome Boyfriend made plans for us to go see the Lion King stage performance in San Fran. I am so excited to see it! Lion King is my all-time favorite Disney movie. I have seen the performance before but, it is something so magical you have to see it again!

20121207_224518

We started off with getting a hotel reservation in Union Square. This is the same hotel we stayed at during our 24hrs of San Fran trip. If you haven’t read that post you should… It is filled with a ton of tips and tricks to enjoy your SF adventure. We also took BART again which made out journey stress free. I knew this trip was going to be an awesome experience because it was Christmas time. Union Square had decked halls and bells of holly everywhere! The tree of lights was enormous and pretty as a picture.

20121207_154936

We checked into the hotel and dropped off our baggage. The weather was unusually warm and dry but we took advantage and did a little sight seeing before dinner. The shops around the area where decorated with joy and fun. We also saw some people ice skating next to the tree in Union Square. People where rushing in and out of all the shops with soon-to-be presents under a tree. It was amazing!

We decided to eat at the Cheesecake Factory on the top floor of Macy’s. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend requested a table outside overlooking the festive square. We had about a 20min wait, so we decided to wonder around Macy’s. I even found a huge chair for a tiny person! LOL

20121207_162650

20121207_162811

20121208_123330

In no time at all, our table was ready. It was great! We were right next to the heater and had a great view of the tree. We timed our dinner plans perfectly so we could watch the sun set and the tree glisten. Our dinner was delicious but our dessert was even better. I had a grilled chicken chipotle pasta that was a little spicy but highly recommended. For dessert, the Birthday Girl ordered the holiday special: white chocolate cheesecake with peppermint bark on a chocolate brownie crust. The best part was the two enormous dollops of whipped cream. ;-D

After dinner, we changed and made our way to the theater. It was a bit of a walk (especially in heels) but doable. We were even surprised to see a historic building lit up for Christmas. Naturally, we stopped for a photo opportunity. This is one lesson life tries to teach us: you have to stop and smell the roses every once in a while. In our case, we stopped to take a great photo.

20121207_191545

Our seats could not have been better. We were able to get the second floor, first row, in the center. This play uses all the space of the theater and these seats allowed us to see everything from the birds, the elephants, the musicians and the drummers. There is one warning that must be known: Do NOT take any pictures of the building or the artists. The ushers will be on you like flies on… well you get the idea. Some wise guy tried to take a picture with the flash and was almost kicked out!

We were soon embraced with the memorable noise of the opening song to the Lion King. The actors were amazing! The costumes where gorgeous and the music was legen (wait for it) dary! There are a few different songs but they stay close to the original story and script. Again, I have seen the movie more times than I can remember and had to stop myself a few times for signing out loud. I give this show two paws up! It was a full house with a standing ovation.

Our walk back to the hotel was fast especially because I couldn’t stop talking about the show! We got in our PJ’s and closed our heavy eyes. While the Lion King danced softy and sang a lullaby.

A Must See Performance- The Lion King!

DIY: Charlie Brown Christmas Tree for Under $75!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! With the economy still recovering and the 1%ers still being part of the 1% club. I decided to make it my mission to make an awesome Christmas tree on a budget. This tree will be great for single moms who want to have the tree experience and still have money for gifts. Students who are still in their dorm rooms will also love this deal. This tree will fit in any office or class room; basically it is a awesome small tree that will fit anywhere.

I live in a one bedroom apartment so space was a key factor in the tree decision. I also love real trees, which was another factor. I set my budget for $100…. then made my plan of attack. I decided that Wal-Mart would have most of the essentials: lights, ornaments, etc. Before I got to the shopping part, I decided on a color theme: blue and silver. From past experience, I decided that a 3-4 foot Nobel Fur tree would be perfect. It is very pretty, small, and has strong branches and needles. Most Christmas tree lots sell these little guys for a good price because of how small they are. 😀 I got my cute tree at HOMEDEPOT and the best part was it was $20 for a 4ft tree with a stand. A little tip: if you go on “Black Friday,” you will get first selection because most tree lots open that day. Yes, I know, I know… this tree would not be anyone’s first pick for “best tree ever”. The tree is bound up so you can’t tell if there is branches missing or if it leans to one side.At first glance, this tree might look like a scrawny Charlie Brown tree but I assure you with a little love and magic; it will be the best little tree ever!

20121123_171910

Then, off to the store! Wal-Mart had a great selection and everything was color coordinated. I started with lights because those were going to be the easy choice. I grabbed two boxes of the mini LED lights that where 20ft (100 count) each. One box was white lights and the other box was blue; again to go with the blue and silver theme. I snagged some sparkly white 40ft garland because I love when the tree has that snowy look. I picked most of my items based on price but I also wanted it to look fabulous; not cheap.

20121117_165217     20121117_164236

The ornaments where an easy find. Literally, Wal-Mart color codes everything from the traditional multi colored (red, gold, green, white), to silver and blue, and even the modern (pink and purple).

20121117_163406    20121117_164813    20121117_164808

I got two containers of multi colored silver and blue balls. Again, I was more concerned about price and looks then anything. But moving on, hooks are always needed for ball ornaments. I also found cute little silver present ornaments; what do my wondering eyes do I see… an awesome string of baby blue balls that would go great on my tree! Don’t be discouraged, there where so many color choices…

20121117_164656    20121117_164255

20121117_164930    20121117_164428   20121117_164820

Every Christmas tree needs a topper. Wal-Mart had a good selection and I didn’t get the cheapest! I balanced it out with a good deal on the ornaments. The one I choose lights up… how could you go wrong with more lights!?

20121117_165517    20121117_170035

20121117_170045

Now for the skirt! I picked the littlest one they offered because it was a good deal and I didn’t need a table cloth. LOL But, if you wanted the big skirt Wal-Mart had you covered.

20121117_170158      20121117_170146

Every Christmas tree house needs stockings! Wal-Mart had a pretty good selection with a variety in style and price. Going with the cheaper stockings would keep you under budget but still give you that “the stocking where hung by the chimney with care” feeling. However, the more expensive ones look a little nicer and if you keep them for next year; they would become the traditional stockings that could be passed down. So, that is what I went for… the cute old style stockings. They are easy to store and can be used for years. Mine is the snowman!

20121117_171225     20121117_170217

And of coarse, I could not forget my little birdy… so I got her one too!

20121117_170442

The Wal-Mart shopping trip was a huge success and I was way under my budget. Here is how everything was broken down…

Wal-Mart
Mini Tree Skirt $3.50
Stocking 1 (Basic) $1.95
Stocking 2 (Basic) $1.95
Star Topper $8.98
White Garland $4.97
Blue Ball Garland $1.97
Blue Ball Garland $1.97
Silver Present Ornament $2.00
Silver Present Ornament $2.00
Hooks $0.97
Multi Colored Ball Ornaments $3.50
Multi Colored Ball Ornaments $3.50
White Lights $2.68
Blue Lights $2.68
Total @ Wal-Mart $42.62
Home Depot
Tree $19.95
Tree Food $1.95
Total @ Home Depot $21.90
Total Spent $64.52

Just don’t forget tax and you too will have a GREAT deal.

Once home it was time to decorate but first, the traditional Christmas tree decorating outfit was needed… Christmas PJ’s!

20121123_223418

So now for the construction of the tree…

On the first step of Christmas tree making,I cut the string of the Nobel Fur tree… ;-D As you can see, it is a cute almost perfect little tree.

20121123_230612    20121123_230907

On the second step of Christmas tree making, I put the lights and white garland on the Nobel Fur tree…

20121123_233230

On the third step of Christmas tree making, I put the string of blue ball garland on.

Tip: I tried to put the string in front of the white garland and light so it would glow and stand out.

20121123_233747 (1)

On the fourth step of Christmas tree making, I attached the hooks to the ornaments and hung them on the tree evenly and with care. The one nice thing about these ornaments are that they are made of plastic so they won’t break as easy as the glass ones. Then, the present ornaments went on easily with their built in loop hook.

20121123_235447 20121123_234807  20121123_234745

On the last step of Christmas tree making, I attached the star topper. Now, the top of the tree had to be slightly modified. First, the branch was too long. So, with twist ties Mr. Awesome Boyfriend bent the branch three times. However, the topper was too heavy and it started to lean. Mr. Awesome Boyfriend cut about a 3 inch peace of an old wire hanger. With more twist ties, he made the branch string enough to support the topper. Then, the tree was watered and the skirt was attached….

TADA!!!… Charlie Brown Christmas tree turned awesome little tree!

20121124_000133

My total money spent should be less than $75 after taxes if you choose the basic stockings… I decided to go for the nicer stockings as they can easily be stored for next year in the linen closet; I was out the door under $85. Oh and for those who think stockings are only for the fire place…

20121124_001523

I attached them to the coffee table with stocking holders from the year before! Merry Christmas one and all and to all a happy tree decorating!

Insanity Update…

So, the last time I posted on weight loss and heath we were talking about a program called INSANITY. Well, it was exactly as it sounds… insane. I loved the program because it was quick and intense but 6 days a week was a little much. The exercises reminded me of my days back in high school and college track and field and cross country running. That was awesome but I ended up stopping the program 3 weeks in because I got the flu. Yeah… exercise and flu don’t mix! Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I decided to start walking for about 40min a day and eat smaller portions. We also made the commitment to have no more fast food. During the flu time, we were eating out because neither one of us felt like cooking and our work out program was surviving work. This life style change has been much easier to maintain and we both are looking better than ever. The biggest advice to those who are looking to lose weight… be smart and commit to a life style change not a program. During the week, we eat very well and then on the weekend we “cheat” and have something special… like dessert or fast food. Our only rule is: Portion Control! We split dessert at a restaurant or only have a “kids meal” or small burger…NO MORE super size! We have had a little help called Hydroxycut which can be found at Wal-Mart. It helps with being hungry and boosts the metabolism. I am now down to a size 6 jean size from a 13 and I love it!

Balance is everything! Good Luck and may the force be with you on your journey to good health!

TWEETY is in the house!

Yup… I am a proud owner of a red factor cannery!  I was originally going to get a fish tank but once I saw this little bundle of feathers; I was in love. This is my first pet bird. The people at Petsmart were very knowledgeable. We got everything from food to cage and beyond. The first night was a little tricky because we needed to find the trust. The little bird was fantastic but we realized that the cage was a bit small. Doing some research, I found the best home ever! Vision cages are designed for optimal birdy viewing and easy cleaning.  Who could ask for more? We got the cage pretty fast in the mail and it was super easy to put together. Our little birdy got the special big deluxe cage. We added a few toys and a nest but it comes complete with perches and food/water dishes. The little birdy immediately loved the cage and I like that it is easy to clean (it takes about 10min for a good cleaning job). We use recycled paper found at the pet shop for the birdy toilet paper and it works out very well. After a few weeks of getting to know our bird’s personality we decided to name her Phoenix….

BlackAngus Anyone!

Summer time is known for hot weather and grilling. As a treat, we decided to try BlackAngus summer menu. The lobster tail is amazing! It is 9oz of deliciousness. I paired it with au gratin potatoes and a salad. Our fried zucchini was an excellent starter. For dessert a yummy chocolate fudge cake… with real hot fudge and vanilla ice cream!

HAPPY SUMMER TIME!
