Happy Chinese New Year!

Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I decided to go see the Chinese New Year parade in San Fran. It didn’t start until 5pm, so we decided to plan an adventure! As you all know, my car is all jazzed up and running smooth as silk. We planned a route that took us to a famous local rest stop called Alice’s Restaurant. This place is iconic for travelers and get all kinds that stop by: motorcycles, sport cars, classic cars and the family sedans. The drive was beautiful but mostly freeway. Once you get onto the curvy roads; be VERY careful of people on bicycles. This is a popular area and it is not uncommon to see 30 or more people biking. We were lucky to get great weather all day so we could have the top down. On a side note; why do people buy convertibles and don’t put the top down?

Anyways, at Alice’s we met a few Mazda friends for lunch. We talked cars and envied each car’s unique character. We sat outside which was cool because they have heat lamps. I had the turkey California sandwich with chips. It was good but maybe a little pricy for just a sandwich. However, for the service and atmosphere, I would come again. We said our goodbyes and headed toward Highway 1 toward San Fran.

The ride was so much fun! There were plenty of twisty roads for my car to dominate. Once on 1, is was more of a cruse because there was traffic but the view of the ocean was spectacular. I didn’t want to drive all the way into San Fran because: 1- I am still learning to drive manual and the hills are intimidating and 2: parking would be a nightmare because of the celebration. We decided to stop at the Colma BART station and use our awesome clipper tickets to get into the city. It was only a 15min ride to get to Powell station and a 10 minute walk to get to union square. This was the center stage for the parade. Instead of staying in the cold, we went to the Cheesecake Factory (on the roof of Macy’s). We were lucky to get a table outside overlooking the parade but we waited for almost two hours for it. It was so worth it! The view was AMAZING, we were warm, and we got great food.

A few of my favorite parts were seeing all the mini dragons. Those people are true athletes! There was a few people who did a flag performance but what caught my attention was the color of the flags. They were a mix of orange, red, and yellow. So, when they were waved, it looked like fire. It was breathtaking. I really like this solo performance of this little lady who was a baton twirler. She threw that baton so high and never dropped it. I am so clumsy I trip over my own feet. LOL Last but not least, the last dragon was so legend (wait for it) dary. They had huge lights on the whole time but at the last performance, the lights dimmed and the huge dragon started glowing!

It was an awesome day and it really makes the adventure better when you are well prepared and have a plan.

Happy Year of the Snake!

I DID IT!

changing oil

I changed my oil all by myself… ok Mr. Awesome Boyfriend helped. I got my hands dirty and it was so cool. We lifted the car and put it on jack stands. I made a newby mistake and dropped the drain screw in the oil catcher pan but I quickly recovered it. I also changed my transmission fluid and rear differential fluid. It was pretty easy but I needed a little help loosening the screws. We bought the oils online as well as a pump. That came in handy with the transmission and rear differential oils. Overall, it only took maybe an hour or two but that included having to get a larger socket from Sears. I did get very dirty and greasy but a little dawn dish soap and fast orange soap got me looking like I never touched a dipstick. 😀 After a bath, the car not me, I took the NC for a little drive. What a difference! All three oils came out looking black and thick. The rear differential even smelled a little burnt. Now, the liquid gold has made the car perr! Shifting is a little smoother and the overall ride feels great!

My Birdy Girl!

Oh my goodness! My little birdy apparently loves bok choy! We usually give her kale or a mixed green salad. At Ranch 99 they have baby bok choy for a pretty good price. I thought well why not, she will NOT eat anything bad; she won’t even eat something that touched the floor! She will just sit there and look at it. It’s like she is thinking, “what am I? … an animal? I don’t eat off the floor!” We found out she definitely does not like mango… 😦 We put a small piece of mango on her salad and she screamed at us and wouldn’t eat until it was removed. She is a smart little birdy. It is so cute when she eats greens; she “juices” them and gets a green beard. I wish I was just as enthusiastic! LOL

I only have eyes for you …

I finally have my eye lids on… the Mazda ! I was able to get them from I.L. Motorsports. The only down side is they didn’t come painted. Once painted, it took about a week to dry, only then did we notice the paint is not exactly right. Then, after a good polishing they where super easy to apply. They already had a sticky tape on them. I think they give the car a more aggressive look like the car is growling … grr! LOL

A Lost Skill …Typing

I use to go through life with the two finger typing. It worked for me but I knew there was a better way. Typing is a skill that has been lost, I think because of texting, but is needed more than ever; now that computers are used for everything! I found a typing course online that is free and includes lessons, games and a certification. There are packages you can buy that support the site (the most expensive is about $15 and it’s for a lifetime membership) that basically gives you the program without the annoying pop up ads. I started out typing about 20 WPM. I do one lesson (which is about 15-30min) a day, and once a week a typing test. I would like to get into the 50-60 WPM by the end. I have found that it doesn’t take as long to type papers (for school) or a blog posts. I did a typing test this week and got 31 WPM. Whoot! I encourage everyone to try; a little bit of effort goes a long way. This skill will help you for the rest of your life! For extra encouragement, I also got a “Das Keyboard”. This keyboard is not like any other; it sounds like an old school typewriter but it is blank. Yup, there are NO letters, symbols, number, etc. You may think it is crazy but give your brain some credit… you will pick it up in no time! Image  http://www.typingweb.com

happy typing!

Birdy Girl

As you all know, I have a cute ball of feathers in my life. Phoenix is about to have her one year anniversary adoption date. OK, I say “almost” and it is really in June. However, she has been amazing and I wanted to share our story.

We got her from PetCO in Dublin Ca. It was love at first sight! We went in the store looking for maybe a small fish tank and walked out with a bird and all the fixings. It took a few months but she has now become apart of the family and she is not a scared little birdie anymore. She loves to eat when the family eats, and if you forget her big bowl of salad- she lets you know. 😀 We started training her to jump on our finger by whistle command. She will (for a second) but only in her “room” (the bird cage). We also started training her to give “kisses”. She will peck my nose when I say, “Birdie girl give kisses”, following a big bowl of salad. She likes to play tough birdie and tries to fight by pecking at my finger. It doesn’t hurt at all but she feels big and strong. If I stop playing too soon, she will follow me around the house tweeting. It’s like she is saying, “hey! play with me”! She is just like a two year old too. She pouts if you don’t say good bye. We let her fly in the apartment and have special perches for her to land but her favorite thing to do is take a bath. She will splash as much as she can and likes standing near the fire place to dry. She has a unique personality and I love it! If you are looking for a first time bird, I recommend a cannery- but (with any pet) they need lots of attention and love.

SKY FALL

Bond, James Bond… I finally watched SKY FALL. It was a fantastic movie. The story was griping and the special effects where great. I have to say the blonde Bond is a pretty great actor.  I would give this movie 4 out of 5 pop corns! My only problem is that they destroyed the Bond-mobile. Sorry spoiler alert! The silver beast, an Aston Martin DB5, was sent to the scrap yard. That is one good looking car. LOL

Sometimes the old way… is the best way!

Are you PHO real?

I have come across two awesome Pho eateries. One is Saigon City in pleasanton off of rosewood Dr. I had the wonton with rice noodles. It was excellent; not greasy at all! The broth is wonderfully fresh and flavorful. The small is a lot of food. I also tried a salty plum soda; which was not bad. ;-D There are real plum chunks on the bottom. The prices were great for the large portions. I highly recommend it! It is a large family owned restaurant but nothing fancy. The service was very fast but make sure you get the right order. Ours was confused with the table next to us.
Another good Pho place is in Dublin at Hacienda Crossing called Pho Asian Bistro. It is a very nice place for lunch or dinner. The decor is fantastic. Again, the portion is big; so I usually get the small. The food is wonderfully fresh. I like the chicken pho with veggies. This place is a little more expensive but it pays in atmosphere.
I want my P-H-O…

I’m a Golden Girl!

I made it… I finally made gold status with my Starbucks card and received the elite card. If you register a gift card at Starbucks.com and make 30 transactions you too can get an awesome gold card…with your name on it! By having the high status you can get: free birthday drinks, free coffee / tea refills, and free food or drink after every 12 stars (transactions). I also use the phone app; which lets me add funds to the card, see my stars and rewards, and pay for my purchases (with a bar code that can be scanned). But, having the card is super cool. I HEART Starbucks!

Happy (almost) Valentines Day!

It’s almost the day that celebrates love and caring. If you are strapped for time or don’t want to wait in line at the mall or local flower shop; try getting your love bug a gift from Safeway! No really, Safeway has got the goodies from flower arrangements to boxes of chocolates and even stuffed animals! The roses are colorful and at a pretty good price with your club card. At the Starbucks kiosk, you can pick up some V-Day items that have gone on sale for the special day. We have a few cute red and white mugs or a hearts tumbler that changes color. If you are thinking about getting something for that sweet tooth the bakery has hand dipped chocolate strawberries that are huge! I also recommend a slice of artisan carrot cake… it is amazing!

Lots of Love!
