Lake Merritt Walk

Every Saturday, Mr.Awesome Boyfriend and I like to go hike but we decided to walk around Lake Merritt instead. We are still recovering from last Saturday’s adventure and getting over the dreaded sniffles. In celebration of Earth Day (the 22nd), we decided to take BART. We used our handy dandy Clipper cards and it was only a 30 min ride to the Lake Merritt station. From the station, the lake is just a few blocks away. Around the entire lake is a 4 mile path but we decided to walk around it twice for extra exercise. It was a beautiful day and there were a lot of people enjoying the sun. It was a nice quite walk and I took some cool pictures of the lake. We found Cleveland Cascade and walked up all those stairs…ouch!

Yogurt Land

No, it’s not a fake place! It is real and they sell the best frozen yogurt! I got a small bowl of strawberry frozen yogurt. It tasted super fresh and creamy. I was pleasantly surprised that it was only 25 Calories per once! The highest Calorie yogurt there was 35 per once. That’s not too bad at all; as long as you have a small portion and not a mountain. I like having about 5 ounces of yogurt and 5 ounces of fresh fruit. It makes for the perfect snack on a warm day.

On To A New Chapter…

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope,it was the winter of despair.”
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

We all go through different experiences, good and bad, but I believe it is how we react; that make people uniquely strong. With that said, I am excited to announce that I will be opening a new chapter and have accepted the Starbucks kiosk manager position at the Danville Safeway. Whoot! I have only been working for Safeway for about two years and I couldn’t be happier! With enough hard work and dedication, moving up within this company is possible. 2013 is going to be a GREAT year! I will have my own kiosk to manage, my race car will be completed, and I will be getting my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

Learn from the past and strive forward with optimism!

Oh Pineapples!

This is the best pineapple cutter ever! I got this at Wal-Mart for about $7. You cut the top of the pineapple and start twisting the cutter. It makes a perfect pineapple spiral, cored and ready to devour. The yellow top comes off so the spiraled pineapple can be put on a plate. I cut the tower in fours. It is perfect! Here is a little secret: if you pull two leaves from the top and they come out pretty easy… you have a sweet delicious pineapple. The easier it is to prepare the more you will eat!

It’s Official… There She Goes!

My car is on it’s way to Florida to get a new engine, exhaust, and turbo. Our new friend, at TDR, is going to hook us up on a great deal. When my car comes home she will have 400 horse power to the wheels! It is going to be a beast! I will be posting, in more detail, about what is being replaced and how the car performs as stock. When she comes back there will be a lot to compare… I am so excited!

WARNING: This hike is not for newbies!

As you all know, Mr. Awesome Boyfriend and I love to go on hiking adventures! This hike we found in a book called Tri-Valley Trails Hiking Adventures in the greater Livermore, Amador, and San Ramon Valleys by Nancy Rodrigue and Jacky Poulsen. We picked up this awesome book at Barnes and Noble. This is great for anyone who wants to know where all the great hiking trails are hiding. The best part about the book is that all the trails are mapped, rated from easy to hard and organized by region. I wanted a bit of a challenge and choose hike 12 East Side Loop in the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. The distance is 6.7 miles that takes about four hours and there is an altitude gain of about 2500feet. However, this does come with a warning label: the first sentence is, “This is one of the most challenging of all the Tri-Valley hikes…”. They were totally right! The hike never takes a break… you are either going extreme up or extreme down. I will admit that hiking sticks would have been a good idea but we didn’t use them (lesson learned)! The park was super easy to find just take 680 to Bollinger Canyon Rd and it will dead end at the park entrance.

Turn left onto Chamise Trail and right when you get to Mahogany Trail. This leads into a shaded canyon and takes you to a cute wooden bridge. Be very careful on this hike because there are snakes and lots of ways to slip. If you get bitten or twist an ankle then, it will be very hard to get back to the car. This is a beautiful hike with lush plants and gorgeous sights!

13 - 13   13 - 15

You will then come to Trapline Trail (stay to the right) which will lead you out of the canyon. At the top of the ridge, Trapline intersects with the Las Trampas Ridge Trail turn right and enjoy the view!

13 - 19  20130413_142434

This hike was great as far as having lots of shade and the wild flowers were amazing! Turn left on Del Amigo but be careful this is were it gets steep! Turn left when you see the small Virgil Williams sign. It is very small!

13 - 20 20130413_150831

Continue onto Madrone Trail which again is super steep. This will intersect with Corduroy Hills Trail.

13 - 9 13 - 2

When the trail forks, take the footpath to the right and make your way up to Eagle Peak! This was a very hard climb but is so worth it for the view! It also has a nice little bench to rest and eat… mmmm…yummy cookies!

13 - 14 13 - 10

13 - 4 20130413_163126

Return to Corduroy Hills Trail then turn right onto Chamise: this will lead you back to the parking!

13 - 8 13 - 12

13 - 5 13 - 7

Make sure to bring plenty of water, food, and clothing! I was so pooped! It was a hard hike but we both never gave up and finished strong! WHOOT! Below is a link to my sport tracker Endomondo. There you can see all my stats and a nice map of the hike!

Rodney Strong!

This is a great Cabernet Sauvignon! It is from the Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards in Alexander Valley (Sonoma County) 2010. This Cab starts the experience with a beautiful deep violet color. The smell is intoxicating with a sweet oaky sense. The wine is stored in the finest oak barrels; it’s like icing on a cake. The taste is very mouth-filling with bold fruit flavors of plum and blackberry and there is a hint of chocolate notes too! I really enjoy this wine with my desserts. The sweetness compliments a lot of yummy goodies. I purchased this prize at Safeway.

My Next Adventure!

I am now going to start improving my reading speed and comprehension! A lot of people are slow readers and spend a lot of time using old reading skills they acquired during grade school. Most people have bad reading habits too that slow the reading process. I read with a “voice” in my head; which means I read word for word. This would cause me to get board and have to re-read material. In all honesty, I never grew up liking to read or spell. It wasn’t until high school when I started reading books for fun. I believe I have found a program that will help A LOT! It is called 7 Speed Reading which is a program designed to break old habits and triple your reading and comprehension. Once downloaded, there are a few videos to watch that will explain why reading speed is important, the habits that slow your reading speed, etc. Then, you start with the eye warm-ups; yes your eyes are like any muscle they need stretching too! The instructor advices to only complete one lesson at a time. He is right; I completed my first lesson and my eyes feel like they ran a marathon! I am excited to see how much I improve. By having higher reading skills and mad typing skills, my homework for school won’t be so daunting!

Reading skills activate!

Bat Sh#@ Crazy!

This is pretty exciting news! I found this on I Fucking Love Science Facebook page. There is a black and white striped bat that has been discovered in South Sudan. This bat is so unique that researchers need a new genus! The bat is just the fifth specimen of its kind ever collected. That is pretty cool to know that some differences can cause a whole new category!

He is actually pretty cute! I wonder if they named him stripes or tux!

Vikings!

This is one of my favorite shows right now. It is one of those shows you can sit back and just be completely entertained. Everyone needs a little escape from reality. The show is an original series of the History channel and it follows the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok and his family. He is a Viking warrior and farmer who wants to explore new lands. Partnered with his boat builder friend; they create a new ship that allows for such adventitious travel. Once the Vikings start to conquer, cultures collide! It is very graphic and violent but the story of love, loyalty, and brotherhood captures your hart. The show is on its sixth episode and is shown on Sundays at 10/9C. If you go to the History Channel website there are a few sneak peaks to watch and older episodes.  For one of the TV ads, the song “Sail” is used by AWOLNATION. This is a great song… it perfectly captures the feeling of the show.
